Les meilleurs, me semble-t-il, ont oublié les contraintes et les affectations, et sont devenus eux-mêmes (Brando bien sûr, Kirk Douglas et tant d'autres), mais les plus mauvais, ou les plus soumis, n'ont jamais su sortir des stéréotypes. Je pense que James Dean possédait une grâce singulière, qui l'aurait autorisé à oublier l'enseignement et les tics agaçants, comme le fit Montgomery Clift. Mais l'on oublie, ce faisant, de placer à l'origine du montage considéré comme un élément constitutif de l'art cinématographique l'immense David Wark Griffith. De ce point de vue, on peut dater l'acte fondateur du cinéma : 1915, année de sortie du film Naissance d'une nation (Birth of a nation. Je néglige volontairement l'idéologie déplaisante de l'œuvre.). Eisenstein connaissait parfaitement ce film, et l'avait justement analysé.<br />Je ne peux non plus évoquer cette période extraordinaire, sans témoigner mon admiration pour Dziga Vertov, lequel a «inventé» le monde en images mentales, lui a fourni les moyens techniques d'apparaître dans sa complexité «téléscopique».<br />J'ai cru utile, cher Vincent, de donner ces quelques précisions, non pour faire le malin (ce qui m'arrive plus souvent qu'à mon tour), mais pour rendre un hommage très sincère à ces trois hommes, qui sont «à l'origine» et à égalité.<br />Il me vient à l'esprit que je devrais consacrer quelques pages, ici, à Griffith, à Vertov, à Eisenstein, et, d'une manière générale, à tous ceux qui ont lavé notre regard, donné une accélération, et fourni de nouvelles formes à notre désir.
